Cannabis, weed, bhang, ganja or otherwise called marijuana is a mind-altering drug used for medicinal and leisure purposes. Emergence of cannabis is dated back to 500BC in Asia. In the 20th century, it was criminalized in America due to racial and political factors. In countries where it is legal, its policies are regulated by the United Nations Single Narcotic Drugs. Canada and Uruguay are the only countries which have fully legalized the sale of recreational marijuana. In such countries, there even exists online weed shop or cannabis shop that sell recreational and medicinal marijuana. It is however illegal in 170 countries and 46 countries.
Marijuana which contains cannabinoids has been proven to have various medical benefits. These include: relieving chronic pain which is a leading cause of disability, helping in the fighting of alcoholism and drug addiction, releases depression and post-traumatic stress illness symptoms, and is effective in chemotherapy to prevent nausea and vomiting. Cannabidiol contained in marijuana has also been proven to treat two rare types of epilepsy, that is Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.
Although cannabis has greatly improved the medical sector, it has various health risks if used constantly. Firstly, it causes mental health problems. Bhang worsens symptoms of bipolar disorder. Regular users who buy weed in Edmonton or elsewhere are more likely to experience suicidal thoughts and have an augmented risk of depression. Secondly, regular users have an increased risk of developing testicular cancer. Lastly, marijuana causes respiratory diseases such as chronic cough and worsens lung function.
As described above, marijuana has both benefits and harm to one’s health. Although it is classed as a schedule 1 controlled substance by the Drug Enforcement Administration, it has helped in the medical sector and helped many people especially those suffering from depression. It has however adverse effects such as being linked to mental health problems. Marijuana can therefore not be classified as good or bad to one’s health, one has to only use it proportionately or allow it to be used only by the medical sector to prevent its adverse effects on one’s health.
